Creating Better Odds

I'd been dragging my feet on fitness for a couple of years, knowing I was overweight. The big push was last year, when my father passed away at 76. My Grandfather passed away at 71 and his father at 70. I kept thinking about my mortality and these statistics are showing me that I have about 20-25 years to live . . . unless I change some habits now.

Andy before joining Farrell'sMy wife came home one day and told me about this opportunity to check out a new place in town to work out. It was Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping in Mankato. She was going to check out a free class. After the class she broached the subject of joining. Well, it was a bit pricey for this 10-week deal; it's at 5am or 6am (and she is far from a morning person, so would need my help getting up), etc. We had joined the YMCA in the past and had paid our dues without going for quite a while before I convinced her to cancel. I thought about it and told her, I'll do her one better and join with her. Heck, 10 weeks? No problem! We can hold each other accountable, and bonus - it's close to our home.

The first 10 weeks kicked my behind in so many ways I didn't even know were possible! I was sore, tired, and physically unable to accomplish some of the exercises. But I was also determined to give it my best - for my health, for myself, for my family and, by golly, I was going to get my money's worth out of this program.

I could see the transformation. I was losing belt notches. My shirts that were stretched out in the stomach were getting baggy on me. My energy was increasing. My mind was sharper. I found myself challenging myself physically throughout the day - doing wide-angle curls with ice buckets, doing squats to pick something up off the floor, and more. By the end of the 10 weeks, I could even reach my toes! I can't remember ever having done that before - even as a kid I wasn't that flexible.

Farrell’s is not easy. Even as a FIT member, it's tough. I have many years of bad habits to overcome. But I find myself continuing to be more aware of what I'm eating, not overindulging in food or alcohol (even on fun day), limiting my coffee intake and boosting my water consumption. I keep pushing myself to do a little more.

Towards the end of my 10 weeks, they were asking for a commitment to join monthly, quarterly, six-months or for a year. I thought that I haven't been able to achieve many of the things they were asking of me, so this probably wasn't the right fit for me. I started researching other "gyms."

For convenience, I wanted to check out Anytime Fitness. Anytime fits my schedule. It was less expensive if I continued to go six days a week like Farrell’s offers. No one would know if I couldn't do a tricep extension or have to skip a count on a lunge to catch my balance or breath. I checked out a free day and found out there was no one there to teach me what to do, no one to hold me accountable, no one to push me to reach beyond my comfort zone. So that one time of wandering around their gym, not knowing what to do, was enough to know I needed to stay at Farrell’s.

From this, I learned I was putting too much pressure on myself to be perfect and was looking for a lot of change in only 10 weeks. So, less self-pressure, but push myself. Get my goals in line – don’t focus on perfection, but reality. Coach Jeremy taught me that you don't have to be superman in 10 weeks. It took a long time to create my gut, It will take longer to get rid of it and create good habits.

Andy and Farrell's Mankato Member in gymI have always eaten whatever I wanted. I've never read or understood a nutrition label in my life. Oh, crap! Look at the junk I've been putting in my body! No wonder I've gained so much weight! I certainly don't know it all yet, but I continue to learn and my wife is a great help and partner in the journey. She teaches me the things I have been ignorant on. She gets up every morning with me to work out. We hold each other accountable. I haven't once had to wake her up in the morning to get to class.

So, if you are like me and want to be healthy, I recommend you check out Farrell’s. They are the whole package - eating right, cardio, strength training, and coaching. It's not about the scale. Balance your carbs and proteins. Never skip a Monday. Earn that fun day. Get out of your head. Every day, every class, Farrell’s drives me to go beyond what I think my limits are.

I even won the 10-Week Challenge. I wasn't in it for the $1,000, but it sure was nice to have my next year paid for. I feel good, I look better, my clothes fit better, I have more energy and I just might live past that 25-year trap that the other men in my family have set.

I feel like I'm a part of something bigger than myself and I can help other achieve their goals while I continue to work on me.
